Mt Hutt Heliski

Mt Hutt Helicopters offers some of the most affordable and accessible heli-skiing and heli-boarding in the Southern Alps. Trips leave from the Mt Hutt ski area or the hangar at Alford Forest and accesses up to 50 named runs in 3 breathtaking ranges.

THe North Peak Run & the Pudding Hill Range

The North Peak Run is a large ungroomed basin offering 800 vertical meters of skiing and riding northwest of the Mt Hutt ski area.  The North Peak Run is an ideal introduction to heliskiing or boarding at a moderate price. If you can do a blue run or better then YOU can heli! If you loved the first run take advantage of an additional run at discounted rates.

The Black Hills Range

Want to explore some terrain away from the Mt Hutt Ski Field?  The Black Hills is the perfect 3 run package for those searching for the thrill of heli-skiing and heli-boarding in pristine terrain.   Let your guide take you on a mission to find the best snow of the day for an epic snow experience.

The Taylor Range

Ever looked at the scoop in the mountains from Methven and said “I want to ride that” - well you can! That scoop is know as “Armchair Bowl” and is one of 50 exhilarating runs waiting for you. Nothing beats the thrill of being flown to the top of a peak to experience fresh, untracked powder.

Mt Hutt Helicopters will take you on the ultimate experience of heli-skiing and heli-boarding.  The terrain in the Taylor Range caters for those looking for adrenaline pumped skiing and riding in the expanse of the backcountry, it offers some challenging chutes, steep valleys with breathtaking views of the Southern Alps.  Average runs are 700 vertical meters with some offering up to 1000 vertical meters.

Ability required
One of the biggest barriers to people trying heliskiing and heliboarding is the general perception that it is difficult.  We have terrain to suit all abilities and if you can tackle a ‘blue’ run or better, you can heliski/board.

Group Size
To ensure safety standards, group sizes are kept small. Minimum of 3 and maximum of 12 people.  You will be grouped according to your ability and your guides will select the terrain best suited to your group.

All our trips are guided by the professional Alpine Guides.  Alpine Guides was set up in 1967 (originally called Alpine Instruction Ltd) and is New Zealand’s longest established mountain and ski guiding company.  A full safety briefing is given to all clients before boarding, including how to use the transceivers and how to safely operate around the helicopter.

Heli-taxi’s and Scenic Flights
If you don’t like the idea of driving up or are simply in a hurry to get fresh tracks, why not fly up in as little as six minutes while taking in stunning views of the Southern Alps and the Canterbury Plains.  The heli-taxi can collect you from Methven, Terrace Downs or the bottom of the ski access road and drops you off in style in the car park of the Mt Hutt ski area.  Helicopter scenic flights and heli picnics also operate from the car park.
