Gearing up for plough champs
21/01/10
Accommodation in Ashburton District during the World Plough 2010 is set to be at a premium.
To date, overseas visitors and officials registered through the website number about 350. Along with all those people, the District is hosting many more international and domestic visitors who will be converging on Methven in campervans, vintage tractors, Whares, steam engines and most likely a few horse teams.
While the final number of visitors will not be known until the event, there is much talk of how many and where people are coming from, with a confirmed group of Austrian Young Farmers having booked into Methven.
Sixty competitors, 60 officials with 250 visitors and supporters make up the overseas numbers to date. There are also 100 New Zealanders staying in complexes in Methven.
Arrivals start on 26th March with many booking for 20 days, and it appears that the vast majority of pre-secured accommodation will be booked up and there are still latecomers registering. Where possible, people from the same country have been put together.
While contestants are practicing and officials are doing their duties supporters will be entertained with a variety of tours including Ashburton, Geraldine, a high country station, the Peninsula and Christchurch. Activities range from helicopter flights, jet boat rides to craft and garden tours.
Ashburton District Tourism’s Event Development Executive has been working with the event’s executive since the bid was successful, and with Ashburton District Tourism, an Associate Sponsor of the event.
The support will continue right up to and after the event. The Event Development Executive has been working with John Hall on promoting the event and getting the word out to all New Zealand.
When the TVNZ Breakfast Show rolled into town at the end of 2009 Ashburton District Tourism were able to have a slot dedicated to the World Plough Championship which proved to be quite a hit with Paul Henry.
On January 24th new billboards will appear at the north and south end of town promoting the event. Ashburton District Tourism has facilitated the use of these sites with Grow Mid Canterbury and Transit.
