Some of the top skiers and snowboarders in New Zealand will take to the air at Mt Hutt this September to kick start the Methven / Mt Hutt Spring Festival, which will include events such as a bid for Guinness record glory and the slopestyle leg of a surf to mountain event.

On Saturday 26 September, the Speight’s Summit Methven Big Air will, as always, provide spectators with the ultimate in blood-pumping eye-candy. Skiers and snowboarders will attempt their biggest tricks outside the Blue Pub in Methven on a 17-metre high, floodlit ramp and kicker made with snow especially brought in from Mt Hutt.

Karyn Heald, event organiser, said the day will not be short of action and kicks off a week of activity and fun on and off the snow.

“Adrenaline will be flowing as skiers and riders hit the ultimate big air jump alongside FMX action, fireworks and plenty of live music at The Rock After Party,” she said.

“This is always one of the favourite events on the South Island snowsports calendar – many people are looking forward to the return of great action and amazing air.”

FMX riders will be pulling off the ultimate in jaw-dropping, death-defying stunts at the Speight’s Summit Methven Big Air while skiers and riders compete for top prizes in the Big Air event. .

This year’s sponsors include Speight’s Summit, Mt Hutt Ski Area, Vodka Smirnoff, The Blue and Brown Pubs, Philip Wareing Ltd, Montana Wines, Fahey Fencing, The Rock and X Box 360.

The Rock Guinness Snowboarding Race World Record Attempt earlier in the day will provide action and hilarity for spectators while the Surf Snow Cup “King of Crossover” slopestyle competition will see riders tearing up the Mt Hutt Tararua Real Ice Coffee (TRIC) Park.

The Methven / Mt Hutt Spring Festival is expected to attract visitors from all over the country to witness an array of events and enjoy Mt Hutt’s famed spring skiing. Once again the ever popular Peak to Pub will take place and this year Mt Hutt has let New Zealand sports legend and past Peak to Pub winner Steve Gurney loose on the course design, to revolutionize the race!

“The course will be extra fun and extra competitive.” said Steve Gurney. “There are lots of exciting new options included in the race course this year; you’ll need to be cunning!”

Other festival events include farmers markets, a downhill dummy race, mountain biking on snow and pond skimming, which never fails to highlight the region’s laidback, community atmosphere.

Dave Wilson, Mt Hutt Ski Area Manager said the festival always drew a crowd to Methven.

“It’s just heaps of fun and very entertaining with an event to suit any age or ability. Mt Hutt is renowned for providing some of the best spring skiing and riding at this time of year and this season is set to be no exception. Spring Festival is a great time to celebrate our region and our mountain.”
