A group of four volunteers are planning on establishing a Methven Community Radio Station by spring.
Their goal is to provide a means of communication, education and entertainment for the local community, and within this framework give opportunity for locals to broadcast programmes of interest to them, provide a vehicle for local businesses and groups to promote what Methven and environs has to offer. The station will play songs from musicians throughout Methven and Mid Canterbury, as well as New Zealand and international artists.
Fraser Chirnside, Kat Anaru, Chris Grieve and Dave MacPhail have formed a registered trust and plan to fundraise and rely on volunteers to establish and run the station that will operate on a low-power FM Station which will broadcast over a 25 kilometre radius.
They are currently seeking community help in carpeting and soundproofing the studio space (an old toilet block in the Methven town centre, thus the name Long Drop Transmissions), wiring the building for power, some building work, getting computers and other technical equipment, including a radio transmitter, and money for fees. Their estimated start-up cost is expected to be $20,000.
Anyone able to help can contact Fraser Chirnside at radiomethven@gmail.com
