Skullcandy Big Air Series - Methven: 27 August

Huge Crowd thrilled by the Skullcandy Big Air Methven

The final event of the Skullcandy NZ Big Air Series in Methven on Saturday night drew thousands of eager spectators, keen to see big air from top skiers and boarders on the huge 17m snow ramp and high octane action from Australasia’s big FMX names and they were certainly not disappointed.

Great weather and a stellar line up attracted an audience of more than 6000 for the action packed night, including spectacular fireworks and finishing with a wicked sell out after party featuring kiwi bands, Left Or Right, The Black Seeds and The Nomad.

For the first time in the history of the event, Freestyle MotoX (FMX) riders flew more than 75ft over the snow ramp to a portable landing. The crowd were treated to holy grabs, rock solids, off the side heart attacks and even a no handed back flip by superstar Kain Saul from Australia.

New Zealand’s top skiers and snowboarders also impressed with an array of tricks and their fair share of dramatic spills. Nick Brown from Queenstown took out the men’s snowboarding and the overall title with a cab 9 narrowly beating Milu Appleton also from Queenstown who threw a back 9 tail grab. Luke Sinclair from Auckland was third with a corked cab 5. The ski competition was won by David Wise from the USA pulling a solid misty with a grab. Matt Soundy from Queenstown followed up in 2nd with his switch 9 grab and Lucas Evans also from the USA came in 3rd pulling off a double front flip.

In the women’s division Methven snowboarder Femke Hilbink rewarded her many local supporters with 1st place and a frontside 3 indy.

The entertainment continued into the night with the hugely popular After Party where more than 2000 party goers rocked to the beats of the bands headlined by top act The Black Seeds.

Event organiser Karyn Heald Robertson was thrilled with the turnout and support shown for the Skullcandy Big Air Methven. “Strong support from sponsors, local businesses and the huge numbers of crew has been the key to getting the event off the ground again. Seeing so many people having such a great night makes all the hard work worthwhile” she said.
