Tenehaun Conservation Area Information & Map

Tenehaun is part of Moorhouse Range, which is to the east of the Rangitata River. It includes Mt Tripp (1368m), the highest peak in Moorhouse Range, as well as walking and mountain-bike public access easements above Rangitata Gorge.

Distance: Rangiatata Gorge entrance 47kms from Methven. Mt Tripp/Moorhouse Range entrance 49kms from Methven.
Directions: From the Methven i-SITE Visitor Centre head north along the Main Street and turn left onto Forest Drive. Follow this road (which changes name to Pudding Hill Road) until you reach the Inland Scenic Route 72 junction. Turn left and follow the road until you reach Mayfield and turn right onto Mayfield Klondyke Road to Mantalto.
For Rangitata Gorge – At Montalto turn left onto Mayfield Klondyke Road; at the crossroads go straight ahead onto Klondyke Terrace. This road continues to the Rangitata Diversion Race intake at the Rangitata River. A public access easement starts from this point.
For Mt Tripp and Moorhouse Range – At Montalto turn right onto Hinds Gorge Road and follow this for 9km. Turn right onto Chapmans Road. The public access easement starts at the end of this road.

Mt Tripp and Moorhouse Range

Classification: Tramping Track (Click on link for more information on walkway classification)
About the walk: Follow the marked public access easement from the end of Chapmans Road to the Hinds River south branch. Public conservation land starts here and gives access to Moorhouse Range and Mt Tripp.
Moorhouse Range can be reached by walking to the end of the public access easement and then following the ridge line, which leads to point 1095. Routes are not marked and this area is suitable from fit and experienced trampers.


Rangitata Gorge

Classification: Tramping Track (Click on link for more information on walkway classification)
About the walk: At the start of the Rangitata Diversion Race (RDR) follow the marked public access easement up the face of the terrace. Once this section has been climbed the route is relatively easy-going and gives good views down into the Rangitata Gorge. This RDR ends at Highbank Power Station.
