Peak to Pub: Mt Hutt Ski Area to Methven - Saturday 2nd October 2010
|
The Columbia Peak to Pub is back and ready for another great year with plenty of added excitement coming from our official Spokesperson Steve Gurney. With Steve on the course design you never know what’s going to happen, stay tuned for what will be no doubt some wild additions to the course. Additionally we are throwing more prizes into the mix with our prize pool almost doubling with the help from our many great sponsors, specifically with the continued support from Columbia who have stepped up their sponsorship once again. Thousands of dollars worth of prizes will be up for grabs, no matter what place you finish you have a chance to win. Mt Hutt's Peak to Pub is not just for the hard core, this race is achievable for anyone who is interested in challenging themselves physically and mentally. From New Zealand’s top multi sporters to enthusiastic amateurs seeking fun and personal triumph everyone is sure to have a blast. Join as a team of three with each person deciding to do the ski, bike or run section or challenge yourself in the individual category and do all three sections. New this year is the addition of a corporate team category so get your business out there and be sure to send a challenge to your competition. Come for the weekend, your legs are sure to be fine after the race so you can dance the night away at the Official after Party at the Blue Pub. Contact Brinkley Resort for great accommodation packages. Peak to Peak winds up the Mt Hutt Methven Spring Fest, a week long festival celebrating the awesome skiing at Mt Hutt Ski Area. So why don’t you head to Methven early to train/familiarise yourself with the course and enjoy a huge line up of events both on and off the mountain at the same time. Check out www.springfest.co.nz for more info. |

The Course:
| Stage 1: Stage 2: Stage 3:
|
Ski/board (2km) Start high on the slopes of the Mt Hutt Ski Area with a mass start at the peak. You will run 100m to your skis or snowboard followed by a Giant Slalom style race down to the base area through a number of gates. You will then hit the transition stage for the transfer to the Bike Section. Mountain Bike (19km) From the Mt Hutt base area you switch to your bike for a heart stopping 19km bike ride down the access road (dirt). It may seem all downhill when you drive it but be prepared to do a bit of peddling. Run (11km) At the bottom of the access road at the corner of Highway 72 the run section begins. From here you follow the road to Methven. As you get close to Methven you head off down the RDR (8m wide river canal) where you will be challenged by an optional short swim section across the ditch. Choose to do the 8m swim across or add a couple minutes to your time by travelling further upstream to the special built “Dodgy Bridge" where you may get your feet wet. Want to stay completely dry? Be a wuss and add a few more minutes to your time to the road bridge even further upstream. From the water crossing it’s a 2km run through the woods ending at the iconic Blue Pub in the Centre of Methven, for a well deserved drink. (Don’t worry there will be water as well as beer!) |
How do the transitions work?
A support crew/person is compulsory for entering this race. It can be one, two or more friends/family who can assist your gear at the ski-bike transition, take your gear and car back down the mountain and collect your bike from the bike-run transition on the way to prizegiving at The Blue Pub- and of course, cheer you on!
A breakdown of way it works: On your way up to Mt Hutt, you can leave someone down there to wait a few hours (or they can drive out separately at 2pm) so they can help you transition from bike to run and secure your bike either on their transport, or wait for your upper mountain support crew to come down behind the last racer on course on the way to The Blue Pub. On the mountain, you leave your support crew and your bike/run gear at this transition outside the cafe (where the race briefing is, you will be able to locate this easily on the day). Then you proceed up the chair lift with your ski/board gear and bib on, and leave your skis/board at the start line and walk back to the pre-start line. You will be directed clearly on the day. Technically you only need one support person, at the ski/bike transition who can do all of the above, but the more the better to help you win!
If you are struggling to organise a support crew, we have created a new initiative this year that may help.
For $25 extra Mt. Hutt will provide transport from the Blue Pub with you and your equipment to Mt. Hutt. Leave your equipment (skis at Mt. Hutt, Bike at bike to run transition) in the marked valet areas where we will then transport your equipment back to The Blue Pub to meet you at the end of the race. In order to be eligible for this new edition, you will need to fill in a section of the registration form letting us know that you would like to have your gear collected. You will also need to bring a bag or small crate box to keep your gear in when you leave it at the transitions (total two bags/box and your ski/board/bike) with your name and cell phone number clearly on the outside of it. This new edition to Peak to Pub is designed to encourage more people to enter who usually would not be able to. Please note however, as easy as this makes it for you, we do recommend that you bring a support crew if you can, so you have people to support you!
