Amazing Space - Methven, Mt Hutt, New Zealand

Columbia Peak to Pub - Saturday 15th October 2011

The Peak to Pub is a three section race which can be done individually or in a team of three.

The race starts on skis or snowboards from the peak of Mt Hutt down to the base area where you switch to a mountain bike and race down the access road before running 11km to the Blue Pub in Methven for a well deserved beer.

The Peak to Pub is an annual event with ever changing conditions and new twists each year thanks to Peak to Pub official Spokesperson Steve Gurney being involved in the course design each year!

147 competitors took on this years challenging course, Glen Currie won the Men’s Individual while Pippa Derram won the Women’s Individual. “The Donkeys” took 1st in the Men’s team category and the “Racing Hens” took the Women’s Team category. The Mixed Team’s category went to team “Fitzbustchen” and “Dower NZ” won the Corporate Team competition.

This year the traditional Peak to Pub weather was back with low visibility on the Ski/snowboard leg and fresh snow making the top of the bike leg a little more interesting. Steve Gurney as promised added some new challenges this year which really pushed the competitors to their limits. Towards the end of the bike section was an optional detour with took the willing competitors off the road and onto a 4wd track. The run was the punisher on the day, no road running this year it was taking down dry creak bed giving the runners a taste of Coast to Coast terrain.

Methven Fire Brigade was awaiting the competitors at the finish to ensure in true Peak to Pub style no one crosses the finish line dry.

It is great to see all sorts of competitors from professional Multi sport athletes to armatures. Rhea Smithson from disabled Snowsports Canterbury took part in the ski leg for the 3rd year running and toughly enjoys the event. The youngest competitor this year was Matthew Lay age 12 racing as an individual; he will be one to look out for in years to come.

Stage 3:
Ski/board (2km)
Start high on the slopes of the Mt Hutt Ski Area with a mass start at the peak. You will
run 100m to your skis or snowboard followed by a Giant Slalom style race down to the
base area through a number of gates. You will then hit the transition stage for the transfer
to the Bike Section.

Mountain Bike (19km)
From the Mt Hutt base area you switch to your bike for a heart stopping 19km bike ride
down the access road (dirt). It may seem all downhill when you drive it but be prepared
to do a bit of peddling.

Run (11km)
At the bottom of the access road at the corner of Highway 72 the run section to the Blue Pub (for a well deserved drink) begins. Expect less road more trail, some water, and a bit of mud!

Join as a team of three with each person deciding to do the ski, bike or run section or challenge yourself in the individual category and do all three sections:
