Methven Walkway Information & Map

An easy walkway mainly following grass verges beside the Rangitata Diversion Race (a dual purpose irrigation and hydro-electric channel carrying water from the Rangitata River to the Highbank Power Station on the south bank of the Rakaia River) and private farmland. The Walkway, commencing at the Methven i-SITE Visitor Centre, is intersected by various country roads allowing several walking options around the outskirts of Methven, in addition to the main track which takes you to a picnic area beside the Ashburton River.

Directions: The Walkway commences at the Methven i-SITE Visitor Centre.
Facilities: Parking is available in the Methven town centre and at points between, where roads cross the canal. No facilities on the Walkway.

Distance: 1 hour

About the walk: Start Methven i-SITE Visitor Centre, Chertsey Road, Cemetery, Barkers Road, Holmes Road, return along Main Street to Methven i-SITE Visitor Centre.


Option Two

Distance: 2 hours

About the walk: Start Methven i-SITE Visitor Centre, Chertsey Road, Cemetery, Barkers Road, Holmes Road, Racecourse, Rangitata Diversion Race Canal to Mt Harding Road, and then onto Forest Drive back to the Methven i-SITE Visitor Centre.


Option Three

Distance: 2.5 hours

About the walk: RDR canal bridge to Ashburton River and return.


Option Four

Distance: 3 hours

About the walk: Start Methven i-SITE Visitor Centre, Chertsey Road, Cemetery, Barkers Road, Holmes Road, Racecourse, Rangitata Diversion Race Canal to Pudding Hill Road, Hobbs Road, South Belt, and then onto Main Street to the Methven i-SITE Visitor Centre.

Distance: 3 hours

About the walk: Start Pudding Hill Road Bridge over Rangitata Diversion Canal to Ashburton River along canal and return.


Option Six

Distance: 4 hours
