Amazing Space - Methven, Mt Hutt, New Zealand

Skullcandy Big Air Series - Auckland: 5 June 2011

Aucklanders were treated to an amazing spectacle of ski, snowboard and FMX action on Sunday 5th June. The postponement of the event to a day later, due to torrential rain, did little to dampen the spirits of these keen snow and sport enthusiasts.

A 17 metre high ramp made from 30 tonnes of scaffold was constructed at the Viaduct Harbour for the event, with additional snow brought in from Snowplanet.

Athletes demonstrated their skiing and snowboarding talents on the huge ramp throughout the afternoon. Wanaka skier Byron Wells won the men’s ski category and Christy Prior and Liam Peter Ryan won the women’s and men’s snowboarding retrospectively. For the first time ever in a NZ Big Air street competition, the women’s category leader took out the overall title, stunning spectators and fellow competitors with her frontside corked 720.

The action didn’t end there, FMX riders took to the ramp performing stunts similar to Crusty Demon shows. Jumping a 75-foot gap propelled the riders into a series of aerial flips and tricks which wowed the crowd.
