Amazing Space - Methven, Mt Hutt, New Zealand

Skiing & Snowboarding in Methven, Canterbury

Methven may look small on the map, but the skiing and snowboarding variety packed into the Canterbury region of New Zealand is unbelievable!

There are two commercial ski areas, three heliskiing operators, the NZ Helipark and five clubfields to choose from - and all within two hours drive from the ski resort town of Methven New Zealand.

Mt Hutt Ski Area

Mt Hutt Ski Area is defined by its
  genuine Kiwi atmosphere.

With one of the best mixes of
mountain terrain in NZ, Mt Hutt
  is a must-do when visiting
  Methven and the Canterbury
region. Views from one of the
highest lift access points in the
  country are breathtaking.

  The award winning Snowsports
  School and excellent facilities
for learner skiers make Mt Hutt
  a popular choice for beginners
  as well as intermediate and
  advanced skiers and
  snowboarders.

Children aged six and under ski
for free at Mt Hutt and a licensed
  Skiwiland Crèche and kids'
  facilities are also available.

Twenty five percent of Mt Hutt's
  terrain is dedicated to beginners,
while 50 percent is accessible to
  intermediate skiers and riders
and a further 25 percent suitable
  for advanced levels.

  Forty-two hectares are serviced
  by sophisticated snowmaking
  machinery.

Mt Hutt Ski Area, open early June
to late October, is just over one
  hour’s drive from Christchurch
  and a 35-minute drive from
  Methven.

Porters Ski Area

  Best described as a boutique
  commercial area, the terrain at
  Porters varies from incredibly
steep to one of the better
  beginner intermediate slopes in
  New Zealand.

  Laid-back, affordable and home
to two of NZ's legendary runs,
Porters is the closest ski field to
  Christchurch and only a further
  20 minutes from Methven than
  Mt Hutt is.

Back Country Skiing

Back country skiing is for those
in the pursuit of fresh fallen
  snow "powder" or snow which
  has not been touched.

  There are several options to
  access this terrain in the
Methven area: outside of a ski
  resorts boundaries, or single /
  multi-day trips with snow
  camping or staying in mountain
  huts where available. Hazards
do exist in the back country so
having a guide can be very
  useful.

The Club Fields

  Canterbury "Club Fields" are
ski areas operated by small ski
  clubs for their members,
  however anyone is welcome.

  They aren't intended for the
  weak hearted, some effort will
be required – you won’t see
  any chairlifts here!
