New Zealand is full of pristine lakes and rivers. None more spectacular than the braided rivers and pure lakes of Canterbury.
The Rakaia River is one of the major braided rivers of Canterbury and is a river of national significance. The Rangitata River is known for its spectacular gorge and has been made world famous for the exciting and challenging rafting available. Lake Heron is the largest lake in the Hakatere Conservation park and is a nature reserve and wildlife refuge, in view of its importance to wildlife, particularly native birds. Lake Clearwater is also a wildlife refuge and is said to provide some of the best fishing in the district and Lake Emma (second largest in the conservation park) is the main breeding lake in the whole region for black swans.
